Residents living along the Tejo (Tagus) River in central Portugal have been urged to leave their homes as river levels continue to rise sharply following days of intense rainfall and severe weather.
Portugal’s Civil Protection has issued strong warnings for low-lying riverside communities, particularly in areas around Santarém, Caneiras, and parts of the Tagus floodplain, where water levels are approaching critical thresholds.
Storm Marta will affect mainland Portugal on Saturday with rain, snow, wind and rough seas.
Around 50 roads are affected in the Santarém district.
Alcochete has closed traffic along its riverfront. They are “very concerned” about the rising flow of the Tagus River.
